Needed: A Summer Wedding

Lorraine Montanari

As we look around what do we find but yet another round of race riots in American streets, gay marriage given more legal rights by the Supreme Court, erratic weather patterns evidenced throughout the world, the inevitable political corruption nationally and internationally—mainly all harbingers that righteousness and rationality still do not prevail in our world presently.  We would be sluggish and torpid of mind and soul if we did not reflect on the present state of affairs as it relates to the appearing of Christ, our Groom, on earth again.  Though no one knows the time of His second coming,  but only the Father, it would be to our advantage to ponder the conditions around which He will return: as Matthew records, people will be eating, drinking, given in marriage…..perhaps the Church, now more than ever, needs to ready itself for the wedding of all weddings.

For Christ is not returning for a shabbily dressed or besmirched Bride but one who wants to sparkle unspotted and unwrinkled in the face of her inimitable Groom.  As with any wedding, we should check our list of things to do to be certain that the event will be stunning and spectacular, a triumphant wedding unlike any other the world has observed heretofore.  As His Bride, we must ever be in the readying mode and consistently diligent to the task at hand.   If we are anticipatory enough and acutely aware of our position, we will, without a doubt, take the collective breath of heaven away with our appearance and preparedness when He does return for us…

The invitations have been mailed requesting the honor of the presence of whosoever will attend—from the naturalized American citizen and our next-door neighbor to the farthest and remotest tribal native  across the planet-- all have been invited.  Not wanting to offend anyone with a slight of omission, we should strive to include and to enlarge the guest list, by the witness of our lives, the lost, lonely, and love-starved that regardless of ethnicity, race, origin, or background, all are welcome as we wholeheartedly extend the invitation.

The flowers to be chosen must be of such genus that only those of radiant color and aromatic pungency will be used.  After all we will grace the Lily of the Valley and the Rose of Sharon with our selections so we would do well to remember as we are told in II Corinthians that through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him.  For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.   Fragrance that lingers is truly the fragrance that attracts.

The gifts have been arriving and catalogued.  Each one of us has been given a tailor made gift to give to the waiting world as allotted by the Groom to wage effective warfare against Satan and the forces of evil while we are still on earth.  Our gifts are given to meet human needs for the strengthening, exhorting, and the building up spiritually of both the churched and the un-churched through evangelization.  Gifts are not given to remain wrapped, admired from afar, or used as ornaments. For once we use and recognize our gifts, we will then be that much more prepared to reign with our Groom when He returns.  Paul Billheimer, in his book, Destined for the Throne, describes our position as the warrior-Bride, who with her gifts and through spiritual warfare, prepares the Bride of Christ for her eternal destiny. Setting up house or better known as preparing for His Kingdom is mainly accomplished through the gifts given to the Bride displayed and primarily used among her invited guests.

The music chosen indeed will set the tone of the ceremony as it will reflect the personal taste of the Bride.  Our daily private devotions with our Groom and to each other in a corporate setting can best be demonstrated through worship by speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs and by singing and making melody in our heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.  What better way musically to personalize and to prepare for a wedding than to make melody directly rendered from the depths of our soul to our Lover whether we are totally alone or assembled in great numbers.

And finally, the finest of cuisine will be served as we partake of the meat of the Word and reflect the fruit of the Spirit.  A Bride, who is strong, mature, consistent, and stable by daily feeding on the meaty intake of Scripture and who reflects the fruit of the Spirit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control is a Bride irresistible to her Groom and inspiring to her guests.  A Bride, who likewise hates the unrighteousness prevalent in society today, is also promised to be anointed with the oil of joy and will be given wine that will gladden her heart.

Rehearsal is just about to begin: our wedding gown has been altered to let out the sin of our life and to take in more of the Spirit as we wait to hear the trumpet sound signaling our cue to begin marching.  Meanwhile, we live expectantly for perhaps a scheduled summer wedding or whenever it will occur.  Regardless, however, of the time when He will return, we hopefully will unabashedly embrace our Groom for we will be ever ready and ever prepared…..Until we share again……a relaxing summer to you all…
